The Parish Pump - The Country Fayre
It will no doubt soon be time for plans to be laid for the next Country Fayre. After witnessing these functions up and down the country it is clear that a major rejuvenation is required. This is not to disparage the tremendous amount of work undertaken by a handful of people. But it is clear that there is a lack of enthusiasm by various organisations in Kinver. At one time both sides of the High Street were crammed with stalls. Nearly everyone dressed up to match the theme. Now there are considerable gaps between stalls and hardly any dressing up. There is a lack of imaginative ideas. There is too much repetition - food, bottle and tombola stalls abound. The parade is a shadow of its former self.
On top of all that - and one of the reasons Kinver organisations are not joining in - is the creeping penetration of outside bodies, some of whom are merely there to make a profit. Many are tatty and some don't advertise their origin. At one time the Fayre was for Kinver organisations only to put on a display to help boost their funds and so contribute to the community through their activities.
Time for a change. First, no outsiders. Second, a decent theme and that involves going back in history and exploring the medieval, Tudor and Victorian periods with plenty of scope for dressing up. Thirdly, a vigorous attempt to involve all organisations in Kinver and to fill both sides of the High Street. Finally, to utilise (if possible and permissible) the Marsh playing field area for such activities as archery, coconut shy, darts, fun athletics for adults and children, and a band - and much more.
The High Street can continue with Morris dancers, jugglers and contributions by school children plus a top class parade. With such an expansion and rejuvenation it might be wise to hold the Fayre every two years.
Now readers - it's your turn!
