I understand there has been little or no formal archaeological study of Kinver Edge and so I was fortunate to spend a couple of days recently in the company of not one but two, very educated men, assisting in the start of what may become a very detailed survey. Funded by the National Trust, and supported by volunteer labour, a large area was subject to a preliminary investigation, extending over the hill-fort site, Nanny's rock, Vale's rock as far as the Worcs border and the slopes below the Edge as far as Kingsford Lane.
Without going into too much detail here, it became apparent that the full length of the Edge, extending far into Worcs, is a site of major importance. Clearly, people have lived and farmed in the area from ancient times, thousands of years before the arrival of the Romans. The hill-fort itself, assumed to date from the Iron-age is, I'm told, 'a classic Bronze-age structure, but with Neolithic origins'.
The plan is for further survey-work; the two archaeologists will return to present their findings in the near future.
